 Requirements and Limits

  • You must be a BGE residential electric customer with a valid account number. Your appliance(s) will be picked up, at no charge, from the address listed on your billing account.
  • You must own the large refrigerator, freezer, dehumidifier, room air conditioner and/or mini refrigerator.
  • Large refrigerators and freezers are eligible for a $50 reward per unit. Mini refrigerators, room air conditioners, and dehumidifiers are eligible for a $25 reward per unit.
  • Receive your rebate incentive check in the mail within 6-8 weeks, following your pickup.
  • In order to schedule a pickup to recycle old, working mini refrigerators and room air conditioners, a large refrigerator, freezer, or dehumidifier must be scheduled for pickup at the same time.
  • The large refrigerator and/or freezer must be 10 to 30 cubic feet, and mini refrigerators must be 3 to 9 cubic feet.
  • The large/mini refrigerator, freezer and/or dehumidifier must be cleaned out.
  • The large/mini refrigerator or freezer must be defrosted and dry, drip pan drained and water lines disconnected. We are unable to accept any appliance(s) with mold or mildew damage.
  • The water line must be disconnected prior to your appointment. Our crews cannot disconnect the water line. If the water line is not disconnected at the time of your appointment, the crew will not be able to remove your appliance from the home. Your appointment will be rescheduled if applicable.
  • Your appliance(s) must be in working condition. If the appliance(s) are not plugged in at the time of the pickup, they will be tested at our recycling facility. If the unit is found to not be in working condition, the appliance will not be eligible for an incentive.
  • There must be a clear and safe passage for appliance removal. We cannot remove railings or move furniture.
  • Appliance(s) can be collected from inside or outside the home.
  • In-Home Pickup Requirements:
    • Elevator access is required for any large refrigerators or freezers located above the second floor.
    • An adult age 18 or older must be present at the time of pickup.
  • Outside Pickup Requirements:
    • If the unit is located outside, ensure that the large/mini refrigerator or freezer is closed securely and cannot be opened by children.
    • If the unit is outside for pickup and no one is home, there must be an authorization form completed and placed inside the unit. The unit will not be collected if there is no signed authorization form. BGE is not responsible for any stolen property left outside for the program.
  • Limit of three large units (refrigerators and/or freezers) and four small units (room air conditioners, dehumidifiers and/or mini refrigerators) per BGE residential household from 1/1/2024 through 12/31/2026.

The EmPOWER Maryland charge funds programs that can help you reduce your energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions and save you money. Since the inception of the EmPOWER Maryland program in 2008, the programs have saved $14.5 billion on installed measures at a cost of $4.1 billion. In addition to new program costs, this charge includes paying off the uncollected costs that were accrued over time by programs required by the EmPOWER statute and authorized by the Commission. In accordance with House Bill 864 the uncollected amounts will be fully paid by the end of 2032.
